Madrasa | Ta’thir

Ta’thir is the impact of music on the listener and on the audience, its influence on the surroundings, the impression left by music when it is absorbed, its effect on the environment, as well as the musical memories stimulated by music when it is experienced in a new place or in a new situation.

Andalusian music has constantly met with challenges and transitions along its thousand year-old history: from Baghdad, the capital of the Muslim empire in the 9th century all the way to Andalusia in distant Spain; from Spain’s Golden age to the expulsion of Iberian Jews to the Maghreb countries; and from North Africa to the land of Israel. A similar, long, winding path is followed by collective memories, from masters who transmit the oral music, from teacher to student, all the way to the Jerusalem Academy of Music.

Here, in this additional link of the cultural chain, this music is still taught orally in the same traditional manner. Occasionally, it encounters young talented musicians specializing in a wide range of musical styles, who perform this music in their own way, on the musical instrument of their choice.

This show, focusing on Moroccan composers ―such as Slimman Almaghrabi, Nino Bitton, and Albert Suissa―who came to Israel around the 1950’s, attempts to trace the Ta’thir – the influences, combinations, mergers and adaptations that impacted their music in the new place. These composers continued a tradition of Moroccan folk music while pursuing a dialogue of connection and mutual influence with the popular Moroccan folk style with which they were familiar, with the Arab style, and with the more Western-oriented Algerian style, by which they were fascinated.

A group of bright, young talented musicians, involved in all areas of musical activity, have made their home at the Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance, and compose the Madrasa orchestra.

At the Madrasa, traditional teaching methods of folk and classical music from North Africa are blended with the unique sounds produced by the diverse and different musical instruments played by the ensemble members.
