Musical Summer Camp

Over July and August, while children are on summer vacation, the Submarine offers a unique musical summer camp program. Professional teachers, fully equipped rehearsal rooms, masterclasses with the finest of Israeli artists, and a finale performance at the end of summer.

Summer vacation can be a wonderful opportunity to give young musicians a creative and intensive learning experience. Many young musicians practice and study consistently throughout the school year, but often their music programs are put on hold for the summer. These two months can be a golden opportunity for budding artists to practice, hone their skills, meet and play music together, but the lack of proper frame to keep them active can hurt their ability to make the most of their musical potential.

The Yellow Submarine offers a unique musical training camp for teens such as these. Participants practice their instruments daily in small groups led by professional teachers, and while doing so receive tools, ideas and tips about practicing at home. Additionally, they play together in groups, performing in many different styles, and execute a rich repertoire which allows each participant to express their full capability.
This program is ideal for teens in the 8th - 11th grades and is suitable for a wide range of technical levels. Each instrument group is comprised of 5 musicians, and each band features up to 6 members. Due to the limitation on the number of participants, entry exams will take place before the program begins.

The Band Project

Every year, 6 young musical groups are chosen to receive full musical accompaniment from the Yellow Submarine: their own producer, rehearsal time, shows, and many important tools of the trade.

The "Band Project" has been active since the Submarine’s very first days, and is supported by the Jerusalem Foundation. It is an instruction and accompaniment project for young bands or groups, whose members are of high school age.

Nir Weinstein, an established musician with a rich background in working with youth, has headed the project for the last 8 years.

The project's main goals are: to support young bands by providing them with a producer from the professional field; give them the tools needed to further develop themselves independently as a band or as individuals, both personally and professionally. The project is suitable for any group within the lighter spectrum of musical styles (Rock, Pop, Jazz, Instrumental etc).

Band members acquire experience and knowledge in group performing, arrangement and adaptation, composition, and use of professional equipment. This is all done under supervision of the project's leader and producer, Nir Weinstein, over weekly rehearsals that take place during the school year. Bands who prove themselves worthy are also invited to participate in ongoing concerts and events in the Yellow Submarine.

At the end of each year, participating groups are recorded, the project is immortalized and is available to be used as a business card in the bands’ future endeavours.

Many of the country's leading musicians got started in youth music programs like the Submarine's Band Project, or the "Youthrock" and "ChoruSchool" programs that came before it.

In opposition to the "Instant Culture” prevalent today, we believe (and know for a fact) that there is an entire community of children and youth out there who regard music in a serious way and understand the importance of hard work, persistence, talent, and established support on the the path to making it in the music world. That is the reason this project's role is so great in shaping the cultural face of Jerusalem in the future, and at the bottom line is a great opportunity to be directed closely by an experienced producer specializing in musical youth, and at a subsidized cost.

The Jumpstart Project - a Cooperation with "Hoshen" High School

As an extension of our Band Project, the Jumpstart Project was born, in association with  the "Hoshen" high school sound program.

The Jumpstart Project is a program for young bands in early stages of their career, created to help groups reach the next level professionally, and in the future- apply for the Band Project. The goal of this project is to recognize and nurture Jerusalem musicians and groups beginning at a young age, in order to help them develop musically and integrate them into the Band Project in the future.

As part of the successful cooperation between the "Hoshen" high school's sound program and the Yellow Submarine, the Jumpstart Project takes place in the halls of “Hoshen” itself. The central idea behind this cooperation is the ability to give students of the school’s sound program an opportunity to be exposed to professional experience in music and sound. We see it as a mission of great importance to integrate these students into daily life, and improve their personal sense of musical capability.

The project is directed by Nir Weinstein on behalf of the Yellow Submarine. Nir selects and arranges selected applicants into groups, and then matches each group with a musical guide to work with throughout the year. Nir has many years of proven experience working with youth in the musical field, and has headed the Band Project successfully for 8 years.

Other program counselors include Or hason and Dor Bar-Av.
