Who is our course right for?

Our sound design course is aimed at musicians, private studio owners or home studio enthusiasts, as well as anyone interested in venturing into or honing their skills in the realm of professional sound design. The syllabus, created by sound and recording engineers, leading sound technicians, producers and educators alike, was designed to answer the needs of participants from a wide range of backgrounds – with great or little experience – who wish to improve and expand their knowledge and be up to date with the latest production techniques in the industry.

There are three central principles that guide the Yellow Submarine’s sound design program

– Giving participants practical experience with the latest equipment:

There is no alternative to practical experience! The Yellow Submarine takes students beyond classroom studies into practical recording and production settings.

Our students are considered family at the Submarine, and all doors are open to them throughout the course. We encourage our students to take part in all musical events and activities taking place, and participate to their ability in ongoing recording sessions and concerts. Practice workshops, which are held in small, intimate groups, provide firsthand experience in operating sound equipment as early as the second study session.

– Holding a sound design program in one of Israel’s most active and important musical centers:

The Yellow Submarine is a leading performance venue and recording studio.

We regularly feature major Israeli artists, both onstage and in the studio, including: Shlomi Shaban, Daniel Zamir, Hadag Nahash, Marsh Dondurma, Asaf Avidan and many others.

Our facilities include an advanced studio setting, rehearsal space, and a performance venue- fully equipped with a sophisticated sound and lighting system.

– Building a team of instructors who are professionally active in the field of sound:

Our staff includes some of the finest producers and sound designers. These professionals are there to make sure that students learn and practice material most relevant to the present and future of the industry.

Integrating Alumni into the Professional Industry

We strive to assist our top graduates integrate into the professional industry and find work in different fields of sound design, whether in event production and live sound, recording studios, video and film studios, or as technicians in cultural establishments around the country.

The Syllabus

The sound design program combines vast theoretical knowledge with practical experience:

Over 130 hours of lectures, workshops and masterclasses and more.

General Overview: intro to sound, microphones, DI, decibels and monitoring equipment, sound processing, control consoles, patching and wiring, recording, DAWs and editing, mixing, mastering, sound for live shows and events, and all types of equipment- amps, preamps, EQs etc…

Staff

Yaron Mohar – Program Administrator

Yaron is a musician and sound designer. He has performed in many jazz, hiphop and funk groups, and recorded albums all over the musical spectrum. Yaron is considered one of the country’s leading sound designers, with a rich background in teaching and working with artists

As well as being General Manager of the Yellow Submarine, Yaron personally runs the sound design program and teaches a number of courses including: frequency and wave theory, microphones, sound processing, patching, wiring and recording.

Yoram Vazan

A leading sound designer and technician with a rich background in professional work with artists of the first degree in Israel and around the world. Yoram has worked with some of the most advanced equipment and studios, and has spent many years teaching and instructing musicians and sound designers. He is a graduate of IAR (New York) where he taught for 6 years, and is the owner of Firehouse Studios in New York. Teaches the mixing and mastering classes.

Eli Zehavi

Sound engineer trained in the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, and has a B.A in education. Eli is an independent sound designer and technician who works with artists in Israel and abroad, administrator of the Hoshen high school sound program, an artist and musician. Teaches all computer classes.

Shai Streifler

One of Israel’s most experienced sound designers with over 2 decades of experience recording and designing live sound for many Israeli artists including: Rami Fortis, The Magical Mystery Tour, Ninet Tayeb, Idan Haviv, The Giraffes, Maor Cohen and Peter Roth, Yoni Bloch, Jane Bordeaux, Korin Alal, Eviatar Banai, Ehud Banai, Irmi Kaplan, Geva Alon, Aviv Gedge, Riff Cohen, Rockfort and more…

Shai has worked as house technician in venues such as the mythological “Camelot” club and the Barby; has done sound design and tech for theater, children’s entertainment and TV shows such as “Layla Gov” and “Rafi Reshef”; and has been head technical manager for festivals including “Mad Music” and the “Shekel Festival”.

In recent years Shai founded and taught a course in amplification and sound at Ruppin college, aimed at people with learning disabilities. Shai has also taught courses at the BPM sound college for 7 years.

Holds a special approach to taming speakers….
