Amir Lev | Electricity from the sun

Amir Lev is back. The musician, producer and writer, mostly known for his deep voice, minimalistic approach to lyrics and guitar playing, is releasing his seventh studio album: “Electricity From The Sun”.

Lev, who has been active in the Israeli music scene since 1996, has gathered a group of Palestinian and Israeli musicians to collaborate on the album. The band has combined in the project oud and middle eastern percussion motives that harmonize with his famous electric guitar and drums – the corner stones in his previous albums – all in a mantric and repetitive fashion. Thus, creating a unique fusion.

Hoodna Orchestra

The Hoodna Orchestra is a 12 member orchestra who studies and investigates the African origins of western popular music. The Orchestra was formed in 2012, in the south side of Tel Aviv, by a group of musicians, and it functions as a collective and a record label.

Hoodna’s musical director is The Guitarist and composer Ilan Smilan. The cultural and musical environment that surrounds the group has a great effect on its creative process. Exposure to Ethiopian’, Eritrean and Arabic musical traditions, coupled with an ongoing study and exploration of different jazz styles, creates a unique blend which has made The Hoodna Orchestra one of the most appreciated and sought-after live shows in Israel. Between 2012 and 2015, The orchestra played every major festival in Israel, as well as all the main venues around the country.

In June 2015 the Orchestra launched its debut album titled “Let Go”. While working on the album and the show, the orchestra got to collaborate with many great artists (Kutiman, Karolina, Estrer Rada, Gili Yalo). The album was very well received. At the end of 2015 the Orchestra debuted a new show titled “The Ethiobeat Orchestra”. It featured the members of ensemble “Adyabo”, and the singer Tesfaye Negatu as well as the dancer\choreographer Aviv Yosef. This project signals the next phase in the Orchestra’s evolution, delving deeper into east African music, particularly the different styles of Ethiopian music, which inspired many new compositions and a lot of exiting new collaborations.

In 2016 the orchestra began working on a new album. While taking their time and experimenting with vintage recording equipment and different acoustics, the orchestra is determined in their search for a unique and original sound. This DIY process and approach places a lot of freedom and control in the hands of the musicians involved, and is aimed to allow for more genuine artistic expression.

A Look Toward the Future: Yossi Fein with Adi Adoniya, Hava Hawan Mshasha and Oshrat Masala

Bass player, guitarist and international producer Yossi Fein presents the future generation of Israeli-Ethiopian female singers, just before they appear on major stages in Israel and abroad.

Fein, known for his active collaboration with Lou Reed, David Bowie and Brian Eno, as well as Shalom Hanoch, Ofra Haza and Hadag Nahash, will appear with Adi Adoniya, Hava Hawan Mshasha and Oshrat Masala. They were born in Israel to families that immigrated from Ethiopia, and the Israeli element in their musical personalities colors their Ethiopian roots in surprising and refreshingly bright hues. Each of them takes a distinct direction: Adoniya, who appeared with Gili Yalu, continues to develop the heritage of Israeli vocalist-composers; Hawan Mshasha presents her Ethio-reggae vision; and Masala loves to sing and interpret jazz songs.

Jimbo J (Omer Habaron) is a rapper, actor and Spoken-Word artist. His debut album “Come Before Me” produced by Itzik Petzeczti and Roee Doron, was loved by the crowds.

On stage, Jimbo and the band mix spoken word with reggae, rap and electric guitars, in a surprising and groovy performance.

The musical production of the album shows respect to words, emphasizing Jimbo’s unique and meticulous way with the Hebrew language and his virtuoso rap. The arrangements range from rap to rock to pop and are a joyous, groovy celebration.
